One year ago, on Aug. 29, 2005, Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast near Buras, La.; the resulting floods devastated the city of New Orleans. More than 1,300 people died in Louisiana while an estimated 300 Louisiana residents died out of state; some 230 people perished in Mississippi. Property damage estimates were in the hundreds of billions of dollars.

Five years ago: George Rivas, the ringleader of the biggest prison breakout in Texas history, was sentenced to death for killing an Irving policeman, Aubrey Hawkins, while on the run.

One year ago: Economist Jude Wanniski, who advocated tax cuts as economic stimulus and coined the term "supply-side economics," died in Morristown, N.J., at age 69.
